Focus and Scope

Nepal, located in the central part of the main Himalayan range, harbors thousands of plant species in its varied habitat range. It rises from the plain of Terai, (60 msl), with warm tropical Sal forest in the south to alpine zone (5000 m or above) in the north that embrace curious cushion like plants in the threshold of extreme cold climate. The bio-diversity found in different altitudinal ranges has been a matter of attraction for many scientists and naturalists.

One of the prime objectives of the Department of Plant Resources (DPR) is to explore and investigate on the plant resources of the country. DPR also is mandated to carry out applied researches and is involved in the management activities for the conservation and sustainable utilization of these natural resources. In addition to this, the Department conducts phytochemical screening, pharmaceutical research and micro propagation. The Department also adopts the recent trends of research and development oriented activities in the country. It bears a great responsibility to share the research findings among the scientific community and disseminates the useful information to the general public to initiate income generating activities.

This publication elucidates research results such as new records of the plants collected in Nepal and the prevailing plant diversities with their uses. It also covers the works of regular activities accomplished within the Department, which is also very important for the institutional development as well. The scientific staff will be encouraged by this publication.
