Abstract

Engaging Bhantana in the resilience and sustainability: sociological perspective is representative vision of the reality. Sustainability and adaptation pattern of the Bhantana of Bhimsen Rural Municipality of Gorkha in different situations as well as the fruitfulness of the concept of sustainable development. Sustainability, though ambiguous and context-dependent, broadly refers to meeting present and future human needs without harming the environment, with its dimensions closely linked to aspects of human adaptation. The social dimensions of poverty highlight how unequal distribution of resources, power and opportunities diminishes individuals' capabilities and leads to social exclusion, limited access to essential services and weakened participation in society. Sustainability extends beyond the natural environment to include the development of knowledge, skills and cultural competencies, as seen in Bhantana Gauan where community adaptation through education, organizational efforts and value shifts has fostered a more sustainable and resilient way of life. Aid should focus on enhancing local resource bases and capacity building by recognizing recipients as active partners with valuable indigenous knowledge, thereby increasing the potential for sustainable development. The experience of Bhantana illustrates that pre-modern societies often practiced more sustainable and adaptive ways of living, and despite modern development disrupting their traditional systems, they have strived to regain sustainability through their own socio-cultural, economic and political efforts.
