Comparative Analysis of Quality Management Perceptions in Public and Private Building Construction Projects in Kathmandu Valley: An Exploratory Factor Analysis and Relative Importance Index Approach

This study investigates the perceptions of quality management among public and private sector stakeholders in building construction projects within Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, utilizing Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Relative Importance Index (RII). Based on 73 valid responses from architects, engineers, clients, consultants, and contractors, the study identifies three key quality dimensions: Quality Standards and Assurance, Project Efficiency and Delivery, and Schedule/Budget Adherence, explaining 66.6% of variance. Both sectors prioritize regulatory compliance, material quality, and workmanship (Spearman’s ρ = 0.766, p < 0.001), yet diverge in emphasis, with the private sector valuing verification and aesthetics, and the public sector focusing on productivity. Challenges such as substandard materials and regulatory gaps persist. Recommendations include adopting digital tools like BIM, enhancing compliance, and fostering public-private collaboration. The findings address Nepal-specific gaps in quality management research, offering actionable insights for improving construction quality, safety, and sustainability.
