Abstract

The current context of rhythmic systems presented in Sangeet Ratnakar Rhythm is an essential element as the foundation of vocal, instrument and dancing. Rhythm is the genre due to which every musical performance gains movement. Due to this importance of rhythm, most musical texts discuss rhythm in brief or in detail. The then rhythm system is also discussed in the Sangeet Ratnakar Granth, composed around the 13th century. In the Sangeet Ratnakar Granth, Sharangadeva has discussed in detail about the ten Pranas of rhythm. These elements (Pranas) are the essential aspects for the creation and presentation of rhythm. This article has been prepared with the aim of further explaining and analyzing the purpose of these elements in the present-day presentation of rhythm. The main basis for this work is the study of the Sangeet Ratnakar Granth and the works written by various scholars related to it in accordance with the title. The facts obtained from previous literature have been explained in a qualitative style and the analysis is presented. The analysis conducted through the present article has revealed the fact that the ten elements of the Taal are equally relevant and used in teaching, directly or indirectly, even in the present day. It is expected that this work will be of sufficient help to all those who want to learn about the essential elements of the Taal.
