The present study is based on the class power relations existing between the characters in the story Irfan Ali. Power relations are a specific type of analytical approach within cultural studies. The study explores the presence of characters in the text and the impact of power dynamics on their lives. The analysis of class relations, class consciousness, and class interests, as well as class divisions, oppression, and exploitation, leads to a conclusion on the nature of class power relations. This paper analyzes the story Irfan Ali, written by Narayan Dhakal, where the ruling class of the dominant central culture maintains its monopoly over all areas of life, including the judicial sector, and imposes constant oppression and exploitation on the subjugated class, even to the extent of inflicting inhuman acts, including taking their lives. The conclusion drawn from this analysis is that the power relations in the text are based on the oppression of the subjugated class. The analysis of class relations reveals a hostile environment, while class consciousness is clearly evident in the ruling class, but it remains nonexistent in the subjugated class. Due to the lack of class consciousness in the oppressed class, their interests have not been realized. Consequently, the subjugated class is forced to endure oppression and exploitation, leading to tragic deaths. In order to analyze these various aspects, the paper primarily draws on the ideas of Gramsci and Foucault, with the support of other theorists. The final conclusion of this study is that the tragic outcomes are the result of the imbalanced power relations created and developed by the discursive structures of the Panchayat regime at the time.
