Women empowerment is an essential feature of social development, promoting gender equality and fostering a fair and inclusive society. The contribution of women’s participation in Indian politics has lagged behind the country’s female population. Women are underrepresented in administrative processes in the country because of a diversity of socioeconomic and cultural factors. However, the constitution provides the equal rights to women for participation in democracy with equal political representation. An authentic democratic representation encourages sufficient involvement of women in politics. Gender equality is a crucial indicator in democratic governance to confirm the representation of women in the Indian Parliament. This study is based on election commission’s report on electoral participation and representation of women in Indian Parliament from first election after independence to recently held general elections in 2024 and also to narrow things down, 40 decades of state legislative elections in one state, Rajasthan, were studied to see how women’s representation has changed over time. The analysis was done based on data collected from the recorded documents. The finding was obtained after a detailed analysis of women’s political participation and representation from being electorate to voters from women as candidate to women as political representatives in parliament of India and assembly of Rajasthan state. This study looks at how representation of women in India’s parliament has improved since independence. It assesses patterns in involvement of women as elected representatives; the consequence of legislative reforms of the Women’s Reservation (Nari Shakti Vandan) Act, and the specific dynamics of Rajasthan’s electoral politics. While representation has grown modestly, structural challenges continue to limit meaningful empowerment.
