Abstract

Background: The sphere of tourism and hospitality is essential for job creation, income generation, cultural exchange, and development in South Asia, although it is susceptible to risks of climate, economic, health, infrastructural, and technological nature.

Methods: The systematic literature review reviews peer-reviewed literature with DOI numbers mostly published during 2021-2025 years and centers on the South Asian countries and the sphere of tourism and hospitality management in South Asia. Literature searches using scholarly search engine and database search engines were performed to select appropriate literature which was further selected based on preset inclusion criteria and categorized thematically.

Results: The results of the literature analysis indicate the five related areas of management including sustainability and environmental responsibility; digitalization and technology-based service provision; resilience and crisis management; service quality and customer experience; and community involvement and sustainable destination management. The literature about India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan is plentiful, while the information about Bhutan and the Maldives is limited.

Conclusion: Tourism and hospitality management in South Asia becomes more oriented towards resilience, technology, community, and sustainability, although the research into these aspects is fragmented by geographical and thematic boundaries and focuses on large hotels and destinations, while neglecting the small ones.

Novelty: The study offers the integrated framework of tourism and hospitality management in South Asia and priorities for future research.
