Nepal is a mountainous nation with a health system that mixes public and private networks. Nepal’s landscape and unique geography make it very vulnerable to a host of natural disasters. On the morning of 26 August 2026, Nepal experienced multiple flash floods. The flash floods and mudslides occurred near the China-Nepal border at Gyirong Port, situated at the confluence of the Trishuli and Lhende khola rivers, an important, strategically located area for trade and tourism, particularly for pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash. The death toll continues to rise, and officially 1377 people have lost their lives thus far, with another 5000 more unaccounted for and missing.
The country's unique terrain poses a major challenge to an already difficult rescue operation. This paper examines how such natural disasters affect the healthcare burden of a developing nation. It is pertinent that further aid is extended to the Nepalese healthcare system, as it will face waves of acute trauma cases and a barrage of public health crises, the consequences of which will be felt well after the first phase of the search and rescue operation has concluded. Nepal may face an acute-on-chronic healthcare burden in the coming weeks.
