This article focuses on the study of the reading culture of indigenous nationality students. Its objectives are to explore the status of students’ reading culture, influencing factors, challenges, preferences in selecting reading materials, and reading frequency. Under a mixed-method research design, a parallel approach has been adopted in this study. Among postgraduate-level indigenous nationality students, only those studying in the Faculty of Education were selected using a purposive sampling method, and data were collected simultaneously. The study reveals that students generally engage in reading for about one to two hours per day during the study period, primarily focusing on prescribed course materials. Although they show interest in materials in their mother tongue, they tend to prefer such materials with the support of the Nepali language. Most students prefer course-related materials, face limited access to linguistic and digital resources, and engage in collaborative learning. Their reading is largely exam-oriented, and they tend to read books even during leisure time. However, overall engagement in reading is relatively limited, and socio-cultural factors directly influence their reading habits. Thus, the study highlights the importance of promoting greater participation in reading culture among students and establishing it as an essential component of quality education.
